WHAT IS BHRT? AND IS IT RIGHT FOR ME?

Friday, December 26, 2025 | By: Casey Posey. MSN, APRN-BC

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy—often called BHRT—is one of the most common topics patients ask me about, and for good reason. Hormones influence nearly every aspect of how you feel: your energy, weight, mood, sleep, libido, metabolism, brain function, emotional balance, and even how well your body handles stress. When hormones shift, even slightly, it can create symptoms that feel overwhelming, confusing, and disruptive to daily life.

BHRT is designed to restore balance in a way that feels natural to your body, using hormones that closely match the ones you already produce. For many women and men, it becomes a turning point in their health—something that helps them finally feel like themselves again after months or years of unexplained symptoms.

In this post, I want to help you understand what BHRT is, how it works, who it helps most, and how to know if it may be right for you. My goal is to give you clear, patient-friendly guidance so you can make confident decisions about your health and your hormones.

What Exactly Is BHRT?

BHRT stands for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, which means the hormones used in treatment have the same chemical structure as the hormones your body naturally produces. Because of this, the body recognizes them more easily, metabolizes them more smoothly, and often responds to them with fewer side effects compared to synthetic versions.

BHRT can include estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid hormones, and other hormone-supportive therapies depending on what your body needs.

The goal is simple: help you restore balance so your body can function the way it was designed to.

Why Hormones Become Imbalanced

Hormone levels naturally change throughout life, but several factors can cause symptoms earlier or more intensely than expected. Age is only one part of the picture.

Common causes of hormone imbalance include:

Perimenopause and menopause
Stress and adrenal fatigue
Thyroid dysfunction
Post-COVID and chronic inflammation
Environmental toxins
Sleep disruption
Weight changes
Medications
Nutrient deficiencies
Insulin resistance
Chronic health conditions
Autoimmune disorders

For some people, symptoms appear gradually—fatigue that slowly worsens, sleep becoming lighter, mood changes that feel unexplained. For others, it happens almost overnight: one month they feel like themselves, and the next they’re exhausted, foggy, irritable, or uncomfortable in their own body.

BHRT is designed to support the body gently, rebuilding balance from the inside out.

Common Symptoms of Hormone Imbalance

Not all symptoms are dramatic. In fact, many patients tell me they feel “off” long before they can explain what’s wrong. Still, the most common symptoms I see include:

Fatigue or low energy
Trouble sleeping or waking up often
Hot flashes and night sweats
Weight gain or inability to lose weight
Brain fog or difficulty focusing
Mood swings or irritability
Anxiety or feeling overwhelmed
Low libido or sexual dysfunction
Irregular or heavy periods
Headaches or migraines
Thinning hair or dry skin
Loss of muscle tone
Feeling tired no matter how much you sleep

If any of these sound familiar, hormones may be playing a much larger role than you realize.

BHRT for Women: More Than Menopause Relief

For women, hormone changes start long before menopause. Many of my patients are in their 30s or 40s when symptoms begin, especially during perimenopause—the transitional years before periods stop.

During this time, estrogen and progesterone fluctuate unpredictably, leading to symptoms like mood changes, insomnia, heavier cycles, increased anxiety, headaches, and new weight gain around the midsection.

BHRT can help stabilize and balance these shifts, making day-to-day life feel more predictable, calm, and manageable. Many women report:

Better sleep
Improved mood
Stable energy
Reduced hot flashes
Clearer thinking
Better weight control
Improved intimacy and libido
Less anxiety and irritability

For women in menopause, BHRT replaces hormones the body no longer produces, gently easing the symptoms that come with low estrogen, low progesterone, and declining testosterone.

BHRT for Men: Support for Low Testosterone

Men also experience hormonal decline, typically referred to as andropause. Testosterone naturally decreases with age, but today I see low testosterone in men much earlier—sometimes in their late 20s or 30s—due to stress, lack of sleep, inflammation, toxin exposure, weight changes, and metabolic strain.

Symptoms of low testosterone include:

Low motivation
Fatigue
Irritability
Decreased libido
Erectile dysfunction
Loss of muscle mass
Trouble losing weight
Brain fog
Mood swings

BHRT (specifically testosterone optimization) helps restore energy, strength, mental clarity, libido, and overall well-being. Many men describe it as “getting themselves back.”

How BHRT Works at Glow Health & Wellness

My approach to BHRT is always personalized. No two patients have the exact same needs, symptoms, or lifestyle, so no two hormone plans should look the same.

This is what you can expect:

  1. A complete hormone and symptom evaluation
We talk about what you’re experiencing, what has changed, and how symptoms are impacting your daily life.

  2. Comprehensive lab testing
I evaluate hormone levels, thyroid function, inflammation, nutrient status, adrenal patterns, and metabolic markers. Hormones never work alone, so looking at the full picture is essential.

  3. A personalized BHRT plan
Based on your labs and symptoms, I create a treatment plan tailored to your body—not a one-size-fits-all approach.

This may include estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid support, supplements, peptides, lifestyle recommendations, or metabolic support.

  1. Ongoing monitoring
Hormone therapy requires thoughtful adjustment over time. I track progress, repeat labs, and make changes based on how your body responds.

  2. Remote and in-office options
BHRT is available both in person and via telehealth throughout Florida and Alabama, making care accessible and convenient.

How Long Before You Feel Better?

Some patients notice improvements within the first few weeks—especially with sleep, energy, and hot flashes. Others experience gradual improvements over several months as hormones stabilize and inflammation decreases.

Most patients feel noticeably better within 6–12 weeks, with continued improvements over time.

Is BHRT Safe?

When prescribed and monitored correctly, BHRT is safe and effective for most adults. Because bioidentical hormones mimic the body’s natural structure, many patients tolerate them better than synthetic options.

I evaluate each person individually to ensure BHRT is appropriate, safe, and aligned with your health goals.

BHRT Myths and Misconceptions

Myth: Hormone therapy is only for older adults.
Fact: Many patients begin experiencing hormone imbalance in their 30s or 40s.

Myth: BHRT is unsafe.
Fact: When monitored, it is safe, effective, and extensively studied.

Myth: You must feel terrible before starting BHRT.
Fact: BHRT can optimize wellness, not just treat severe symptoms.

Myth: Hormone therapy is the same for everyone.
Fact: BHRT is highly individualized—your dose, symptoms, and needs guide the entire process.

How to Know if BHRT Might Be Right for You

BHRT may be a good option if you:

Feel tired even with adequate sleep
Have new or worsening mood changes
Struggle with weight gain
Experience brain fog or memory issues
Have hot flashes, night sweats, or irregular cycles
Notice changes in libido
Feel “off” or not like yourself
Have thyroid issues contributing to symptoms
Are recovering from Long COVID and feel hormonally depleted

If symptoms interfere with your daily life, relationships, work, or emotional well-being, exploring hormone testing may give you answers you’ve been missing.

The Emotional Side of Hormone Imbalance

One thing I always remind my patients: you’re not imagining your symptoms, and you’re not “just getting older.”

Hormonal changes affect your brain, your emotions, your motivation, your body composition, and your resilience. These shifts can feel overwhelming and deeply personal, but they are also highly treatable.

You deserve to feel good in your body again—clear-minded, energetic, balanced, and confident.

Final Thoughts: Is BHRT Right for You?

BHRT isn’t about turning back the clock. It’s about helping your body function the way it was always meant to—steady, balanced, energized, and resilient.

If you’ve been struggling with symptoms that don’t make sense, or if you feel like something is off even though your regular labs are “normal,” BHRT may offer answers and solutions that traditional approaches overlook.

My passion is helping patients understand their bodies, take control of their health, and finally feel heard. Whether you’re navigating perimenopause, menopause, low testosterone, thyroid issues, chronic stress, or post-COVID changes, you don’t have to live with symptoms that limit the way you feel every day.

If you're ready to explore BHRT or simply want to know whether hormones are contributing to how you feel, I’m here to help.
