What if your blood sugar is making your menopause symptoms feel worse? A recent study looked at women with normal blood sugar compared with women who had prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. The women with blood sugar problems reported more menopause symptoms and said those symptoms were more severe.
In simple terms, the women with prediabetes or diabetes had about 28% more symptoms overall, and their total symptom severity was about 40% higher. The difference was especially noticeable in postmenopausal women.
Researchers do NOT yet know that high blood sugar directly causes worse menopause symptoms, but the study adds to growing evidence that hormone changes and metabolic health may be closely connected.
Estrogen changes can affect insulin sensitivity, body fat distribution, sleep, inflammation, and the way the body uses energy. At the same time, insulin resistance and poor blood sugar control may make some menopause symptoms harder on the body.
This is another reason menopause care may need to look at more than hormones alone. Blood sugar, insulin resistance, sleep, weight changes, cardiovascular health, and hormone levels can all be pieces of the same puzzle.
